Bunny Lake: The Sound Of Sehnsucht
Label: Universal
Release: 11th May 2012

Since the passing of Falco, no one has created such intimate and passionate songs about the glamour of Viennese nightlife than Bunny Lake. Now, everything is different. On their fourth album, “The Sound of Sehnsucht” the Vienna electro-pop band moves from dark clubs to daylight.

Christian Steinbrink (“Intro”) on BUNNY LAKE
Up until now BUNNY LAKE has recorded three albums.
The Late Night Tapes came out in 2006, The Church of Bunny Lake appeared in 2007, and in 2010 their evolutionary pop advanced even further with the release of The Beautiful Fall. Now, with The Sound of Sehnsucht, they have brought out an album which “is both a break and a new beginning”, according to Christian Fuchs who, along with Suzy on the Rocks, is the inner core of the band. Until now, BUNNY LAKE used their home city of Vienna as a source of lascivious inspiration and celebrated the decadence of Falco, the eternal Viennese role model whose hymn to partying, “Ganz Wien”, they once sang as a cover song. Everything is now somewhat different. The motto is now: Contradictions Rule!

In describing the creative and production process behind The Sound of Sehnsucht, Christian Fuchs and Suzy on the Rocks say: “This album went through many more phases than our previous records. Within the band there was an impulse to see what themes our music could address besides nightlife, its crash-and-burn aftermath, and ecstasy.” Much of the album was recorded in the Styrian countryside at the studio of producer Bernd Heinrauch. In this rural setting BUNNY LAKE discovered entirely new aspects of their music, together with producer Gareth Jones, who has previously worked with Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten, Goldfrapp, and Grizzly Bear. “We did not just record songs with Gareth, but for the first time brought in various instruments which we played, drums were beaten, it was a kind of studio freakout. We even recorded the bells of the village church.” Suzy on the Rocks: “I’d already had a desire to play analogue instruments on previous albums, especially The Beautiful Fall. Now we’re finally there!” The best example of this if “Woods On Fire”, a song with down tempo beats and acoustic guitar licks. The number is reminiscent of elegant pop bands without a direct link to dance-floor music. Listeners familiar with BUNNY LAKE’s disco-compatible work to date will immediately recognize the new contradictions. Field recordings collide with electro sounds to create existential confrontations: artificial vs. authentic, technology vs. nature. Confrontations which cannot simply be dissolved, but which have to be presented and carried out.

House with additional levels

On the other hand, there are a few numbers such as “Sehnsucht” (“Desire”), which closes the album. The cover of this old song from Einstürzende Neubauten is very House, which BUNNY LAKE has not really been in the past. The key line, “Meine Sehnsucht kommt aus dem Chaos, ist die einzige Energie” (“My desire comes out of chaos, it is the only energy”). BUNNY LAKE says, “This perfectly describes the new works, which have an indefinable desire as a constant source of musical propulsion. Chaos is also important because we don’t want to see ourselves as simply a lovable simple pop act. Gareth Jones produced the Neubauten in the early 1980s, and therefore he appreciates the proper conversion of intent into art. Co-producer Christopher Just has tricked out a sound which is tighter and more minimalistic than our previous dance tracks. The album’s title though refers not to the cover version, it is a nod to certain Austrian musical clichés.”

“The Sound of Sehnsucht” is not strictly an electronic pop album. It is complex, it was thought through, it retains dance floor elements while at the same time taking the music to other  levels. It has taken Bunny Lake into the daylight, to a status as something entirely unique in European pop. The Sound of Sehnsucht is an album which will move night people and romantics alike, both creating and destroying utopias. Optimistic apocalypse pop, bonfire disco, or, as was mentioned: Contradictions Rule. Bunny Lake has ably translated these contradictions into sound.
