Samuels / Vinding / Riel - Summer night in Denmark, CD release, November 30 th 2009
This new live recording (Dave Samuels first trio recording ever) was made on a beautiful Danish summer night. Dave came down from Aarhus where he had been a guest with Klüvers Big Band and meeting up with Alex and Mads just three hours before the concert. Just having enough time to run the tunes over and have a rest before the concert. The material being mainly standards with a few originals of Dave Samuels. The concert was recorded and it turned out to be just one of those special summer nights you remember.
Dave Samuels has established himself as the top mallet player of his generation. He is recognized for his fresh new sound and creative approach to both the vibraphone and marimba. Samuels has demonstrated his versatility and gained world wide recognition by performing and recording with a broad scope of artists ranging from Gerry Mulligan, Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Carla Bley and Pat Metheny to the Yellowjackets, Bruce Hornsby, Frank Zappa, The Fantasy Band and Spyro Gyra.
Mads Vinding is one of the worlds most virtuous bass players. He was featured in the movie 'Round Midnight' and has been touring all over the world with people like Hank Jones, Duke Jordan, Toots Thielemans, Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter and many others. In the later years he released and had great success with his trio recordings incl. Enrico Pieranunzi, Roger Kellaway, and Carsten Dahl.
Alex Riel is a very important part of the European jazz history as a member of the house trio in Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen from the beginning of the 60's. Here he developed a reputation as the favourite drummer of masters like Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster. He also toured and recorded with Bill Evans. Since then Alex Riel has been strongly in demand playing all over the world with Kenny Werner, Gary Burton, Charles lloyd, NDR Bigband and many others.
