Argentina | Chamamé
Intangible cultural heritage of humanity
To use the word 'universe' is not a cliché when it comes to the prodigious accordionist Chango Spasiuk, master of chamamé. From his place in the world, he created a common link between tradition and classical music, between the modern nuances of jazz and electronica, between musical excellence and the festive energy that unites people across continents.
In December 2020, this universality was acknowledged by UNESCO which registered chamame music on the list of the Intangible cultural heritage of humanity, reinforcing, even more, his status as a worldwide figure !
From his birthplace of the North-East of Argentina, he became one of the main representatives of chamame, a musical genre that mirrored his intense cultural crossbreeding from the cradle. A global person with native-American guarani soil, his Spanish cultural imprint, his Slavic ancestors from Ukraine, the mesmeric Chango Spasiuk has been vibrating stages around the world for thirty years : from prestigious places of high culture to the common issues dedicated to modern and popular music.
Concerned with the transmission of tradition, he nourished himself with other musical genres and innovations from the globalized world, in order to share the universality of his birthplace’s cultural crossbreeding : radio & TV programs, documentaries, films music, transgenre and transnational musical collaborations, streaming of concerts and sharing experiences…
Chango Spasiuk is a prolific artist whose liberty of creation rises exponentially in touch with the artists with whom he collaborated : Mercedes Sosa, Raul Barboza, Bobby Mc Ferrin, Cyro Batista, Kepa Junkera, Carlos Nuñez, Chancha Via Circuito, Per Einar Watle… Despite the abundance and the variety of his projects, this hyphen artist always knows where to place the center of his universe !
A gorgeous discography since 1989, national and international awards, dithyrambic multidisciplinary media… Chango Spasiuk swarms energies of his native red soil around the world !

Will fill your living room with light.
Great artistry, virtuoso talent... It’s a deep, unfettered joy to indulge in Chango’s masterpieces.
Spasiuk has revitalised the music’s barn-dance traditions to create something thrillingly modern and cosmopolitan. In such hands, the charm of chamamé is irresistible.
A messianic-looking figure with long air, beard and flashing eyes, he stopped between each song as if he was meditating, before he launched into his next passionate instrumental.
I can think of few better ways to spend an hour than with this, one of the very finest albums of the year.
Far from sounding rustic or rural, the mostly instrumental, acoustic work boasts a sophisticated sound
that infuses earthy traditions with jazz influences and classical touch.
